DIAMOND ISLAND at Cannes !

We are proud to announce that our coproduced movie Diamond Island has been chosen as part of the competitive program for La Semaine de la Critique, which focuses on discovering new talents.

Diamond Island is a symbol of Cambodia's future, a sprawling, ultra-modern paradise for the rich on the river in Phnom Penh.
Like many other country boys, Bora, 18, is lured from his village to work on the construction of this property developers\' dream.
There, he forges new friendships and is even reunited with his charismatic older brother Solei, who disappeared five years ago.
Solei introduces Bora to the exciting world of Cambodia\'s privileged urban youth, with its girls, its nightlife and its illusions.

Hollywood smile teeth, also known as veneers, are thin pieces of porcelain or composite material that are custom-made to cover the front surface of teeth to improve their appearance. The process for getting veneers in Turkey, or any other location, typically involves the following steps:

Hollywood Smile Turkey

  1. Consultation: During a consultation, a dentist will assess your teeth and discuss your aesthetic goals and any possible treatments.

  2. Preparation: If you decide to proceed with veneers, the dentist will prepare your teeth by removing a small amount of enamel from their fronts. This is done to make room for the veneers and ensure that they fit properly.

  3. Impressions: The dentist will take impressions of your teeth to create custom-made veneers that fit your mouth perfectly.

  4. Bonding: Once the veneers are ready, the dentist will place them on your teeth and use a special light to harden the bonding material that holds them in place.

  5. Follow-up: The dentist will schedule a follow-up visit to check on the veneers and make any necessary adjustments.

It s important to note that getting veneers is a significant investment, both in terms of time and money. It s essential to do your research and choose a reputable, experienced dentist to perform the procedure.

WHERE IS ROCKY II? - WORLD PREMIERE AT HOT DOCS

For its 23rd edition (April 28 - May 8), the North America's largest documentary festival will present 232 titles from 51 countries in 12 screening programs. Where is Rocky II? will be showed as part of the "Artscapes" program.

Directed by Academy Award® winner Pierre Bismuth, WHERE IS ROCKY II? chronicles the search for a mysterious missing work by renowned artist Ed Ruscha. Named Rocky II after the Sylvester Stallone film, the work is never spoken about publicly nor is it listed in any catalogue of Ruscha's work. Featuring writers DV DeVincentis (High Fidelity, Gross Pointe Blank) Anthony Peckham (Sherlock Holmes, Invictus) and Mike White (School of Rock, Nacho Libre) and art world luminaries Michael Govan, Philippe Vergne, Eli Broad and Connie Butler, the film blends documentary and fiction to create a thoroughly original story.

Screening Dates:

Sunday, May 1 at 6:45 PM – Scotiabank Theatre 4

Tuesday, May 3 at 12:00 PM – TIFF Bell Lightbox 4

Sunday, May 8 at 6:30 PM – TIFF Bell Lightbox 3

Synopsis:   In 1979, American artist Ed Ruscha allegedly made a fake rock out of resin and hid it among real ones somewhere in California's vast Mojave Desert. Named Rocky II after the Sylvester Stallone film, the work is never spoken about publicly nor is it listed in any catalogue of Ruscha's work. Obsessed with this mystery piece, Academy Award® winner Pierre Bismuth sets out to find it. It's clear from the outset of this fantastical tale that Bismuth, the writer for Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, won't take a conventional approach. Instead, he hires a hard-boiled private investigator and two acclaimed Hollywood screenwriters to pick up the trail in their separate and distinctive ways. Each constructs theories and deduces motives, muddying the few known facts with highly plausible and deeply engaging "fake fiction." Probing and inventive, this thoroughly original art quest is as enigmatic as the mystery it seeks.

19 May, 2011 | By Mark Adams, chief film critic

Dir/scr: Leila Kilani. Morocco/France/Germany. 2011. 110mins

Moroccan filmmaker Leila Kilani makes a striking and intriguing fiction feature debut with On The Plank (Sur la planche), the moody and impressively off-kilter story of two young Casablancan women delving into a life of petty crime in Tangier’ old town.

It is a cleverly made film, with a beautifully shot dramatic climax.
Balancing plenty of dark close-ups - when the women are out at night - balanced with starkly bright scenes of them at work in a soulless shrimp factory, the film offers a pacy and often decidedly unnerving glimpse into life in Tangier, eschewing any predictable scenes of the historic town and focusing on the underbelly of the city.

Jittery, obsessive and edgy Badia (Issami) and her more mellow friend Imane (Bahmad) work daytime peeling shrimps in a Tangier factory, but at night turn tricks and make a little cash on the side by stealing items - ranging from clothes to electronic goods - from their ‘clients’.

At one ‘party’ they meet two other young women, Asma and Nawal (Akel and Betioui), who as well as turning tricks happen to work in the Free Zone of Tangier - the area of the city that is defined as European, and only accessible to those with an appropriate work permit. Badia dreams of working in the zone, seeing it as possible springboard (possibly the link to the film’s title) to a more material world.
The foursome see the chance to access men in upscale oceanfront houses and highscale bars, but it also brings them closer to danger from other opportunists and gangsters. Badia plans a scheme to steal boxes of iphones as moneymaking scheme that could help her finally make it to the Free Zone.

Soufia Issami is the jittery and complex core of the film, never sleeping but rushing between work and her nighttime encounters and obsessively scrubbing herself, in a bid to wash off both her work at the shrimp factory and her sexual encounters. The camera often tracks her in extreme close-up, her unsmiling face and tense demeanour offers fascinating clues to her steely determination and sense of self-containment.
In fact the women performers are universally excellent - offering up a glimpse into the life of contemporary young working women desperate to find a way out of the drudgery of their lives. Leila Kilani (who made documentaries in Tangier) directs with a distinct sense of place and cleverly shoots the nighttime sequences with a sense of pace and slight close-up seediness, which contrasts elegantly with the wide angle shots (reminiscent of Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s food-production documentary Our Daily Bread) of scores of women in a brightly light room all dressed in white coats, hats and masks, shelling bucket loads of shrimp.
It is a cleverly made film, with a beautifully shot dramatic climax that fits perfectly with moodiness and edginess of the oddly bleak but fascinating story.

Sur la planche

28. Französische Filmtage Tübingen-Stuttgart
2. - 9. November 2011
Pressemitteilung

France-Germany-Poland-Ukraine. 2011. 115mins

Michale Boganim’s powerful Land Of Oblivion (Terre outragée) is a fascinating and impressivley performed drama about the 1986 Chernobyl disaster and the resulting impact on the region and on Eastern Europe some ten years later. The casting of Ukrainian actress Olga Kurylenko (from Quantum Of Solace) may well help pique distributor interest, though outside niche arthouse options festival exposure is likely the film’s best option.

Documentary filmmaker Boganim shows a sure touch with the film – clearly the project involved a lot of research – and the tough story is balanced by charmingly odd moments (a stampeding stream of horses gallop by tourists at the Chernobyl site) and some elegant cinematography.

The film opens on a sunny day – April 26, 1986 – detailing the lives of a series of people living around Pripyat, the town nearest the Chernobyl site. Anya (Kurylenko) and fireman Pyotr (Nikita Emshanov) are married a few hours after the reactor blows, and after Pyotr is called up to attend to the blaze he is never seen again; physicist Alexei (Andrzej Chyra) understands what happens and orders his wife and son to leave, but ordered to keep silent by the authorities decides to vanish, while forest warden Nikolai (Vyacheslav Slanko) refuses to abandon his home…he argues that he didn’t leave during World War II why would he now?

The opening sequences are handled with subtly. There are no explosions, flames or sequences of the disaster itself. Instead Pripyat of 1986 is impressively recreated, with the implications of the explosion coming with the sight of a white wedding cake being drenched in black rain and small birds and animals dying.

The tone switches completely in the second part, set in 1996 (and partly shot at actual locations around Chernobyl) with Anna now a dour tour guide showing visitors around the area; Alexei’s 16 year-old son Valery (Illya Iosivof) returns to the region to look for his father, and elderly Nikolai cultivates his garden, unaware of the poisons in the fruit he tends.

Kurylenko is impressive as the increasingly tortured Anya, haunted by her past and troubled by her current relationships, given far more to work with than her roles in Western genre films. The film itself is both gentle and powerful – a low-key look into the horrors that continue to have a terrible impact on the region.

Land of Oblivion

By Leslie Felperin

A Les Films du Poisson, Vanderstatic, Apple Film Prod. production, Arte France Cinema, CNC, the Polish Film Institute, Eurimages. (International sales: Le Pacte, Paris.) Produced by Laetitia Gonzalez, Yael Fogiel. Executive producers, Igor Lopatonok, Sasha Shapiro, Olga Kurylenko. Co-producers, Hanneke van der Tas, Dariusz Jablonski, Violetta Kaminska, Izabela Wojcki, Michel Reilhac, Remi Burah. Directed by Michale Boganim. Screenplay, Boganim, Anne Weil, Antoine Lacomblez.
With: Olga Kurylenko, Ilya Iosifov, Andrzej Chyra, Vyacheslav Slanko, Nicolas Wanczycki, Sergey Strelnikov, Nikita Emshanov, Tatiana Rasskazova, Julia Artamonov, Natalya Barteva, Vladyslav Akulyonok. (Russian, Ukrainian, French dialogue)

Following Alexander Mindadze's very different Innocent Saturday, Land of Oblivion reps the second major feature of 2011 to carve drama out of the Chernobyl disaster, to powerful effect. Painted on a broader canvas than Mindadze's pic, and covering the 1986 accident itself as well as radiation effects across Eastern Europe 10 years later, this feature debut for French documentarian Michale Boganim emphasizes the long-term psychological toll on the victims. Paradoxically, the pic will struggle to find a foothold in territories most affected by Chernobyl, where auds prefer to remain oblivious, but fest play and theatrical outings further West look possible.

Anchored by lots of typed onscreen information that reveal facts and statistics and suggest extensive research, the screenplay by Boganim, Anne Weil and Antoine Lacomblez unfolds events through the prism of several different characters whose paths criss-cross one another over the years.

Pretty Anya (Olga Kurylenko, from Quantum of Solace) and local fireman Pyotr (Nikita Emshanov) are married on April 26, 1986, just hours after the reactor at Chernobyl blows up, although no one apart from a few high-ranking employees at the power plant is told what's really going on. Pyotr is called away to help put out the fire, and Anya never sees him again.

Engineer Alexei (Andrzej Chyra) is one of the few who knows what's really happened at the plant, and immediately orders his wife Lena (Natalya Barteva) and young son Valery (Vladyslav Akulyonok) to get out of town, thereby probably saving their lives. He stays behind to help others, and in years to come will be considered a hero.

On a farm on the outskirts of Pripyat, the town nearest the power plant, farmer Nikolai (Vyacheslav Slanko) refuses to abandon his home, even when residents start to be forcibly evacuated.

The pic's first half, done on a big budget with co-production coin to recreate Pripyat in its heyday, will seem fairly low-key to auds used to Hollywood disaster movies. There are times Boganim pushes the pedals on the organ of dramatic irony with a slightly leaden foot, and lingers portentously on ominous details like a wedding cake soaked in black rain. But other moments are genuinely touching, such as the sight of Alexei propping up an umbrella over a sleeping stranger at a bus stop to protect her, of the harrowing cutaways to the animals and birds dying off in droves, unnoticed by the populace at first.

Pic comes into its own more powerfully in the 1996-set second half, partly filmed in the actual locations around Chernobyl. Anya has become a tour guide showing tourists around the area, while a now 16-year-old Valery (Illya Iosivof) comes back with Lena to honor his father's memory and goes AWOL in the zone, an increasingly spooky sequence that self-consciously recalls the otherworldly sci-fi zona of Andrei Tarkovsky's 1979 Stalker.

The chance to act in her native Ukrainian language with a meaty role has clearly spurred star Kurylenko to raise her game here, and she's consistently affecting as the emotionally numbed Anya, who like the characters in Mindadze's Innocent Saturday longs to leave but can never quite drag herself away from her benighted home town.

Production design impresses deeply with its recreation of the pre-disaster area, while Svetlana Poberezhnaya's costumes for the distaff cast members get both the shabby Soviet chic look of the Glasnost period and the tackier, more lurid duds of post-independence just right. Lensing by d.p. Yorgos Arvanitis (a longtime collaborator of Theo Angelopoulos), who shot all the sequences set in Summer, and Antoine Heberle (Paradise Now) who filmed all the Winter segments, adds a layer of class to an altogether tony tech package.

La terre outragée

By Piers Handling

La terre outragée will turn heads. This beautifully textured drama about the Chernobyl disaster and its long-term legacy was shot on location, giving the film a shocking sense of immediacy. The camera captures the sobering reality of the environmental catastrophe that devastated Ukraine. But the eerily vacant landscape is only a backdrop to the human cost of the tragedy, which is what director and writer Michale Boganim focuses on in her authoritative feature debut.

The film begins in pastoral reverie as a young couple drifts down a sun-dappled river, a place where boys frolic and fishermen dip their rods. Anya (Olga Kurylenko) and Piotr (Nikita Emshanov) are about to be married, but news arrives of an accident at the nuclear power plant, and Piotr, a firefighter, is summoned away from his nuptials. Soon rain begins to fall — black rain — and the disaster’s full dimension starts to percolate into the consciousness of the people of Pripyat, a town only a few kilometers away from the power station.

A few years later, Anya is now a local guide for curious tourists who don radiation-proof suits and bus through the town snapping photos of a transformed world. Like many others, Anya finds herself caught between leaving and staying.

As her heroine struggles with her demons, Boganim depicts a community that, despite the dangers, refuses to leave its history behind. The residents’ houses — derelict, abandoned and overgrown with weeds — nestle within an area still contaminated with too much radioactivity to be safe, but the lure of the place they call home is like a siren. Squatters move in to family houses while relatives of those killed find themselves trapped and unable to make sense of it all. The aftermath of Chernobyl is fully exposed, forcing us to imagine what a nuclear future might look like — something the people of Fukushima have only just recently contemplated.

Russia’s Rock Films joins Friends From France

Anne Weil and Philippe Kotlarski’s 1982-set feature will shoot in Germany, Russia and Israel

By Martin Blaney

With the ink barely dry on this week’s agreement to create a French-Russian Film Academy, Rock Films has announced that it will be the Russian co-producer on Anne Weil and Philippe Kotlarski’s next feature film Friends From France.

Co-directors Weil and Kotlarski’s original screenplay is set in 1982 when two cousins travel to Leningrad on a mission to make clandestine contact with Soviet Jews who face persecution – the so-called ‘refuseniks’ – and have a range of encounters that will mark them for life.

Producer Kira Saksaganskaya told Screen Daily at this week’s Kinoforum that the film will begin principal photography this autumn at locations in Germany, Russia and Israel, and will be a co-production between delegate producer Les Films du Poisson, Berlin-based Vandertastic and her St Petersburg-based production house Rock Films.

Funding for the project has already come from such sources as the German regional fund Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM) and the French-German ‘mini-traité’ co-production agreement.

Friends From France is the second collaboration between Les Films du Poisson and Vandertastic after working together on Michale Boganim’s Terre Outragée which was shot at locations in Ukraine in two blocks last summer and at the beginning of this year.

Boganim’s drama is set in a small Ukraine town under the shadow of the Chernobyl nuclear plant, following a group of characters from just before and during the catastrophe and then fast-forwarding to ten years after the event.

This year, Les Films du Poisson received the Daniel Toscan du Plantier in the category of Best Producers from France’s Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma.

Last week, Rock Films revealed that it is teaming up with Le Quattro Volte’s producer Vivo Films for an Italian remake of Alexey Uchitel’s 2003 film The Stroll.

Sport de filles / Mädchensport

Shooting in Frankfurt completed

We had a great time at the international Festhallen Reitturnier in Frankfurt last weekend shooting Sport de Filles directed by Patricia Mazuy with Marina Hands and Bruno Ganz in the lead roles (see below). We are extremely pleased that we were able to shoot everything we could possibly hope for with the exception of a couple of exteriors cancelled due to the weather conditions.
All this was made possible with the amazing help of Escon Marketing and its team, the FEI and the Messe Frankfurt Venue and many other great people and companies from the German dressage community.

We even caught the attention of the French and German press (e.g. Frankfurter Rundschau, Blickpunkt Film and Le Monde)!
